The Department of Architecture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has outlined plans to expand programmes, strengthen research output and improve staff and student development as it prepares to mark its 70th anniversary next year.
At a four-day academic staff retreat held from December 2–5 at the Nyansapo Eco Resort in Moree, the department’s first in 15 years, members reviewed current operations and set new targets to align with emerging industry demands.
Joining the team, the Provost of the College of Art and Built Environment (CABE), Professor Christian Koranteng, urged staff to recommit to the department’s founding ideals. “We’re architects and so we must build excellence,” he said.
Participants developed a standardised assessment guide for undergraduate and postgraduate studio work, including a revised design thesis and studio handbook. Strategic discussions also produced proposals on staff welfare and development, publications and promotions, Commonwealth Association of Architects accreditation, grantsmanship, income generation, collaborations, infrastructure expansion, and policies for student discipline and recognition.
A key focus of the retreat was the design of contemporary, demand-driven academic programmes. Representatives from the Interior Designers and Decorators Ghana joined the third day of deliberations to contribute industry perspectives.
Head of Department, Professor Daniel Y. A. Duah, praised staff for their commitment, noting that “with unity and dedication, the Department can achieve great strides” as it positions itself for its 70th anniversary milestone.
